This is my head at the end of The Honeymoon by Tina Seskis: OMG OMG WHAT JUST HAPPENED I did not expect that I can’t believe it you can’t leave me like that……
OK, let’s go back a little. Jemma is a few days into her honeymoon in The Maldives, when her husband disappears from the island as if he’d never been there in the first place. The police are suspicious, she doesn’t know if she can trust her new friend Chrissy, and her mother-in-law has just arrived. The whole island has seen Jemma and her husband arguing. Will any one believe she is innocent?
The story begins seven years before the honeymoon, when Jemma meets her new boyfriend. It’s through these flashbacks that we really get to know Jemma, and I didn’t find much to like. She’s obsessed with the type of man she thinks she should be with, and lashes out when she’s in a bad temper. There’s a twist quite early on, which I worked out, and it sets the train of events in motion for Jemma’s husband to vanish all those years later.
Back in the Maldives, Jemma isn’t acting how a newlywed whose husband is missing should be, in the eyes of hotel staff and the police. I was intrigued by Chrissy, the glamorous fellow-honeymooner who Jemma confided in the night before her husband went missing. What about the handsome boatman who can arrange travel off the island; did he help Jemma’s husband to escape home? There are plenty of possibilities to make your head spin as more and more home truths are revealed.
The conclusion, when it comes, is brutal and impossible to predict. If any one tells you that they guessed it beforehand, they’re having you on. It’s quick, it winds you and then it’s over, and my only criticism is that I could have done with a few more pages to process everything after following and investing in these characters for so long.
